1. What Causes Sagging Skin?

Sagging skin that accompanies the aging process is caused by three main things; lower skin levels of hyaluronic acid, decreased collagen production and decreased skin cell production.

Hyaluronic acid is a compound that is found throughout the body. It has many functions. In the skin, it plays a role in firmness and the skin’s ability to retain moisture. It also plays a role in the transport of new skin cells from the skin’s stem cells to the skin’s outer layers.

Collagen is a structural protein that the body uses to make the elastic fibers primarily responsible for skin firmness. Collagen production decreases with age for unknown reasons.

The skin’s stem cells begin producing fewer new cells, also for unknown reasons. As new skin cell production decreases, the skin becomes thinner and more likely to sag.

The underlying cause of all three issues may be poor nutrition or poor nutrient absorption. The small intestine is where most of the nutrients you consume are absorbed into your bloodstream. The walls of the small intestine sometimes become damaged with age making it more difficult for the nutrients to pass through.

Nutrients such as protein and vitamin C are needed to create collagen fibers and new skin cells. Hyaluronic acid is composed of a variety of nutrients including amino acids and glucose. Sagging skin is sometimes seen in young people who are suffering from poor nutrition.

If your skin is dry, you have another problem. Skin cells that are well hydrated are firm and plump. When they are not well hydrated, the skin’s layers will seem thinner and may sag.

     2.  How to Prevent Sagging Skin?

Eating right may help. Making sure to always get enough protein and vitamin C could help keep your body producing new collagen and new skin cells longer than usual. If you’re like most people, there is plenty of glucose in your bloodstream.

There are many reasons to maintain a healthy weight. This is one that you might not have thought of.

Yo-yo dieting, that is losing 20 or 30 pounds only to gain it back, causes the skin to stretch, tighten back up and stretch again. As you age, you could have permanently sagging skin. It’s like a balloon that is inflated and deflated repeatedly. It eventually cannot get back to that tight shape that it had when it was new.

Staying well hydrated by drinking plenty of water is good advice. You should also be using a good facial moisturizer on a daily basis. Just be careful about the ingredients the moisturizer contains. Some are ineffective. Others may actually contribute to skin dryness.

There may be a way to prevent low hyaluronic acid levels, but using a skincare product that contains hyaluronic acid is not the answer. The ingredient cannot be absorbed into the skin. There may also be a way to prevent collagen loss, but using a cream containing collagen is not the answer. That’s another ingredient that cannot be absorbed by the skin. You’ll learn about ingredients that are effective in another section of this page.

     3. How to Get Rid of Sagging Skin?

If your skin is less firm than it used to be, you probably want a solution for the problem. Even cosmetic treatments like face lifts and collagen injections are not very effective for improving firmness.

Some studies suggest that dietary supplementation with omega-3 fish oil improves the skin’s firmness. Getting more omega-3s through eating salmon, walnuts and olive oil has also been suggested.

What you really need to be able to do is to increase your skin’s hyaluronic acid levels, stimulate collagen production and stimulate the production of new skin cells. How do you do that? It takes nutrients. These are nutrients that you apply directly to your face.

Home Remedies that Improve Firmness

This is a mask you can make at home. It contains nutrients that may help improve your skin’s firmness. It might not work immediately. A better solution may be to use anti-aging skincare products on a daily basis. But at least the mask is something you can make at home. You might even have all of the ingredients in your kitchen.

  • One egg
  • One over-ripe avocado
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 2 slices pineapple

  • After peeling the avocado and discarding the pit
  • Combine all of the ingredients in a food processor.
  • The consistency should be relatively thick. If it is too thick to mix properly, you can add a tablespoon of water or another dash of olive oil.
  • Apply the mixture to your face and neck.
  • Leave it on for 20 minutes while you listen to some relaxing music.
  • Rinse with warm water and pat dry. You should notice some improvement in firmness.

    4.  Why this might work?

Eggs and avocados contain protein that your skin needs to make cells and collagen. Olive oil and pineapple are moisturizing. All of the ingredients contain antioxidants that are beneficial for your skin’s health.

Pineapple contains vitamin C which is needed to form strong collagen. Pineapple also has natural anti-inflammatory activity. So, the mask should feel soothing.

Ingredients that Work Better for Improving Skin Firmness

Research has shown that protein peptides and other natural ingredients effectively stimulate increased production of collagen and new skin cells.

Protein peptides are fragments of protein. They can only be isolated by professional research and development teams.

You can get protein from eggs or avocados, but because they are larger chains of amino acids, they probably cannot penetrate into your skin’s layers. The following ingredients are those that have proven to be beneficial for improving skin firmness in scientific studies. Details about each ingredient and why it works are also included.

  • Bioactive keratin—the exact protein that makes up the cells of your skin’s outer layers; shown in clinical studies to stimulate the production of new skin cells; also a source of zinc and copper peptides that stimulate collagen production; found in the best anti-aging skincare products for daily and occasional use; shown to improve firmness and elasticity by 40% after 18 days of daily use
  • Rigin—a proprietary protein peptide shown to increase the skin’s firmness by nearly 20%; usually found in anti-aging masks designed for occasional use
  • Phytessence wakame—an extract from wakame seaweed; shown to effectively protect the skin’s hyaluronic acid levels; found in the best anti-aging creams and lotions

Those three ingredients address the main causes of skin sagging. They are also moisturizing and nourishing. They contain antioxidants that protect your skin from the other visible signs of aging. If you use skincare products containing those ingredients on a regular basis, you should see a substantial improvement in firmness in a relatively short period of time.
